Background

Plans were submitted to the Energy Consents Unit of the Scottish Government following an extensive community consultation and survey period that began in 2023.

Turbines would have a maximum tip height of up to 200 meters and a capacity of up to 7 megawatts (MW). A Battery Energy Storage System will have an approximate capacity of 23 MW, providing a maximum capacity of up to 65 MW.

The initial proposals could generate 113 GWh of electricity annually, equivalent to the annual power needs of approximately 35,750 homes.

Blackhills Wind Farm, if consented, will provide opportunities for local businesses, both during construction and throughout the wind farm’s lifetime. Further information will be advertised through the project website if the proposals are approved.

Following feedback received during the consultation process, the decision was made to reduce the number of turbines from eight to six.

If consented, the wind farm could generate a community benefit fund worth over £210,000 annually throughout the project’s lifetime, depending on the wind farm’s ultimate capacity. The fund will benefit projects in the area, and conversations are already underway with local groups, including education partners and charities, about how to utilise it.

KRE UK hosted a successful “Meet the Developer” event on Tuesday, June 4, 2024. Three consultation events followed this in October 2024. The team held a final consultation event for revised proposals in February 2025 in Fogwatt, Lhanbryde and Inchberry.

The team received a wide range of feedback from the local community, which was carefully considered and informed changes to the design.

Due to the wind farm’s capacity being above the 50MW threshold, Moray Council will be a statutory consultee with the Scottish Government’s Energy Consents Unit ultimately determining the application.

About Koehler Renewable Energy

Koehler Renewable Energy (KRE) was founded in 2012 as a subsidiary of the Koehler Group, headquartered in Oberkirch, Germany. With the establishment of Koehler Renewable Energy UK Ltd. in September 2021, Koehler Renewable Energy is expanding its activities in the UK and other European countries. The company is based in Dundee, Scotland, and focuses on onshore wind and hydropower projects in the UK.

Koehler Renewable Energy is sustainably shaping the energy transition in Germany and also abroad. Koehler Renewable Energy’s experts cover all stages of the value chain: acquisition, planning, development and the seamless long-term ownership and operation of the plants. Together with business partners, numerous projects have already been implemented in the fields of biomass cogeneration, onshore wind power, photovoltaics and hydropower. New energy technologies are also in focus.

Together with various partners, the experienced team has already implemented projects worth several hundred million euros, generating over 268,000 MWh of electricity, over 23,000 MWh of heat, and over 638,000 tons of steam annually (as of June 2022). Koehler Renewable Energy is thus making an important contribution to Koehler Group’s sustainability strategy, with the aim of covering all the energy required for the production of Koehler Paper by generating renewable energy with its own plants by 2030 at the latest
